4 easy steps to hang picture frames

It’s that time of year again where family and friends visit us to spread their festive joy. So why not get your home ready by hanging some family pictures? But where do you begin and which tools will you need? For this project, we suggest you have a good set of basic tools on hand.

1. Rough plan

Firstly, decide on the space you’ll use. Hold up the picture to roughly where you want it then remove the picture and mark the wall with a pencil – this will be your horizontal halfway point.

2. Accurate plan

You then need to decide how high the print will be on the wall. We recommend the middle of the print to be at about eye level. Most experts say that should be about 150-165 centimetres from the ground. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark this and then line it up with your horizontal halfway point to find exactly where the centre of your print should sit. You can now check the back of your print and measure how far from the centre your hanging wire sits and calculate exactly how far above this to apply your nail or screw.

3. Attach to the wall

Now you have to decide how you’re going to hang it. Think about: the size/weight of the picture and the type of wall you are using. If the picture is small and light, you may be able to get away with using a nail/hook and hammer. However, if you are hanging on a dry wall, many experts recommend using anchors or a plug to ensure that it stays put. There are two main types: heavy-duty toggle bolts and plastic wall plugs. Toggle bolts will certainly carry the most weight, but will also do the most damage to your wall because you need to drill a larger hole. For either of these options, you will need to use an electric drill to drive a hole into your wall before pushing your plug/toggle bolt into it. A screw can then be applied for your picture to sit on.

4. Hang and admire

Sit back and admire your handy work. So simple, but your new pictures will make such a difference to your home – enjoy!
